Beschreibung der Forschungsarbeit
Die Arbeitsgruppe Intestinale Mikrobiologie untersucht das humane Darmmikrobiom im Kontext von Gesundheit, Krankheit und menschlicher Evolution. Ziel ist es, mithilfe moderner genomischer und funktioneller Methoden die strukturelle und funktionelle Vielfalt des Darmmikrobioms sowie dessen Rolle bei chronischen Erkrankungen systematisch zu erforschen und therapeutisch nutzbar zu machen.
Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der repräsentativen Erfassung der globalen mikrobiellen Vielfalt des menschlichen Darms, um bestehende Verzerrungen in der Mikrobiomforschung zu überwinden. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Partnern, insbesondere aus Ländern mit niedrigem und mittlerem Einkommen, nutzt die Arbeitsgruppe Biobanken der internationalen Initiative Global Microbiome Conservancy sowie klinische Biobanken der Universität Kiel. Mithilfe von in-vitro-, ex-vivo- und bioinformatischen Analysen werden mikrobielle Funktionen identifiziert, die mit Lebensstilfaktoren sowie Gesundheits- und Krankheitszuständen assoziiert sind.

Wir untersuchen die genetische und funktionelle Vielfalt von Darmmikroorganismen, um ihre Rolle für Gesundheit und Krankheit besser zu verstehen.
Globale Diversität des menschlichen Darmmikrobioms
Durch internationale Kooperationen und die Nutzung von Biobanken untersuchen wir die mikrobielle Vielfalt des menschlichen Darms in unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungen weltweit.
Mikrobielle Funktionen und therapeutisches Potenzial des Mikrobioms
Wir identifizieren mikrobielle Funktionen, die mit Lebensstil, Gesundheitszuständen und chronischen Erkrankungen assoziiert sind und ein therapeutisches Potenzial besitzen.
