Research Description
To decipher underlying mechanisms in early life influencing the development of asthma, we focus on environmental factors like active tobacco cigarette consumption and vaping. We hypothesize that parental smoking behaviors during their own sexual maturation impacts epigenetic modulation in their oocytes and spermatogonia. Utilizing a mouse model, we investigate how smoking of the father during his own puberty increases the asthma susceptibility of his future offspring. With our fly model (Drosophila melanogaster), we explore the consequences of maternal e-cigarette consumption before conception on their offsprings’ development and asthma risk genes. In COPD, cigarette smoking is one of the main causes and many patients suffer from comorbid obesity. As in current science, the obesity is rarely explored in COPD disease models, we established a murine COPD model with comorbid obesity and bacterial airway infestion to investigate the higher exacerbation severity observed in those patients. All together, we aim to prevent disease development and lung function decline as well as mitigate disease progression.
