The Intestinal Microbiology Working Group investigates the human gut microbiome in the context of health, disease and human evolution. The aim is to use modern genomic and functional methods to systematically investigate the structural and functional diversity of the gut microbiome, as well as its role in chronic diseases, and to harness this knowledge for therapeutic purposes.

A particular focus is on the representative mapping of the global microbial diversity of the human gut, with a view to overcoming existing biases in microbiome research. Working closely with international partners, particularly from low- and middle-income countries, the research group utilises biobanks from the international Global Microbiome Conservancy initiative as well as clinical biobanks at the University of Kiel. Using in vitro, ex vivo and bioinformatic analyses, the group identifies microbial functions associated with lifestyle factors as well as health and disease states.

Genomic and functional characterisation of the gut microbiome
We are investigating the genetic and functional diversity of gut microorganisms in order to gain a better understanding of their role in health and disease.

Global diversity of the human gut microbiome
Through international collaborations and the use of biobanks, we are investigating the microbial diversity of the human gut in different populations around the world.

Microbial functions and the therapeutic potential of the microbiome
We identify microbial functions that are associated with lifestyle, health conditions and chronic diseases, and which have therapeutic potential.
