The “miTarget” Research Unit has been investigating the role of the gut microbiome in chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) since 2020. The groups led by John Baines, Christoph Kaleta, Mathilde Poyet, Felix Sommer and Daniel Unterweger of the Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM) of Kiel University (CAU) and the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) – Campus Kiel contribute to this consortium with its coordinator and spokesperson Andre Franke of the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB). The DFG has now announced that it will fund the research projects for a further four years with a total of almost 6.1 million euros. In the second funding phase, scientists from IKMB and IEM at Kiel University, as well as the Max Planck Institute in Plön and the Helmholtz Zentrum München are mainly involved.
